About the LG-HPC.
In 1996 the City adopted a Historic Preservation Ordinance and established the Lake Geneva Historic Preservation Commission (HPC), to educate citizens and promote historic preservation in the area.
The Commission has
placed seven individual buildings on the National
and State
Registers of Historic Places, along with two historic districts.
The Main Street Historic District is the
original commercial core of the City and the
Maple Park Historic District is the original residential
section of the Village of Geneva.
We have also distributed information on tax credits for
historic restoration and presented historic plaques to over 120
buildings in the City, all in the hope of encouraging a renewed
interest in restoring homes and commercial buildings in the
community. New projects under consideration are a historic
walking path near the White River and improving the condition of
Pioneer Cemetery.
The LG-HPC, through persistent efforts, has convinced the National
Trust for Historic Preservation that Lake Geneva is a special place,
historically and otherwise. In January the National Trust put
Lake Geneva on its 2009 list of a Dozen Distinctive Destinations.
